ALOR SETAR, 17 December 2024: Torrential monsoon rains from 26 to 29 November 2024, caused significant flooding in several areas of Alor Setar with Jalan Gunung Keriang being among the worst affected. In response to the escalating crisis, most residents were evacuated to nearby Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) for safety.
As the floodwaters receded, the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) launched a relief initiative to assist those affected by the disaster. The initiative focused on Kampung Alor Pea, a village along Jalan Gunung Keriang that had suffered extensive damage from the flooding.
On 12 December 2024, a team from OYAGSB Sintok, comprising 12 staff members and three international students, arrived at the site to support cleanup efforts. The volunteers were divided into two teams and worked alongside local residents to clean homes and restore a sense of normalcy. One of the affected residents, Mr. Dawam, a retired police officer, shared his distress explaining that his house and car were both submerged in the floodwaters. “This is the first time my house has ever experienced flooding,” he said, noting the severity of the damage.
The initiative concluded with the distribution of flood relief aid. Led by Prof. Dr. Subramaniam, the Deputy Dean of OYAGSB Sintok, the team provided basic food packages to 23 affected families. During his speech, Prof. Subramaniam expressed hope for the victims’ swift recovery and noted that the assistance was intended to alleviate some of their burdens.
Among the volunteers was Mr. Amr Fahmi Omar Faqera, a PhD student from the School of Economics, Finance, and Banking. Reflecting on the experience, he remarked, “This has been an eye-opening experience and has strengthened my sense of empathy and social responsibility.” He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the relief efforts.
OYAGSB’s prompt response and dedication to assisting the affected community highlight the importance of solidarity in times of crisis. The initiative not only provided much-needed support to flood victims but also exemplified the spirit of volunteerism that OYAGSB seeks to foster among its students and staff. – Hasniza Norsazali
